Weld studs are installed on one side of the metal fabrication and offer quick installation high joint strength and a permanent fixing. Percussion welding is mainly used for attaching wires to surfaces or studs to thin sheet. Electric arc stud welding was initially developed prior to wwii as a necessity for rapidly attaching wood planking to naval aircraft carriers. When there is no side significance this can commonly be applied using a resistance spot welder which is used widely in sheet metal work.
